Ornamatics [2/2]: W*Facade

May 26th, 2011, architecture

Course tutors: Jack Breen, Martijn Stellingwerff, Robert Nottrot

Second part of the previous project, this time exploring the possibility of scaling up the same design process to the level of a facade design.

The wetgrid principle (based on Frei Otto’s wool thread experiments) evolved to into a hybrid hanging chains experiment – on the basis of one algorithm connections were merged while the other insured a theoretical optimal distribution of forces.

Final build-up diagram illustrating adaptive shading possibilities along the main structural elements.
